Introduction

HMU (Former TEI of Crete)  is a 25 year old institution which has undergone continuous growth and development with new departments and its curricula restructured in order to meet the demands dictated by its new University status.

An Erasmus student at HMU  has the opportunity not only to study a variety of courses offered but also to experience the Greek way of life and participate in several cultural and recreational events organized during every academic semester.

General Information

 

Academic Calendar

The academic year at HMU consists of the “winter” and the “spring” semesters, the examinations periods and the summer vacations. Each semester lasts 15 weeks.

The winter semester begins the first week of October and ends mid January followed by a 3-week examination period.

The spring semester begins after the mid of February and lasts until first week of June and ends with a 3-week examination period.

Registration Process:

Detailed information for the procedure can be found at the website iroen.hmu.gr of the International Relations Office of HMU.

Students who plan to come to the HMU under the Erasmus or other EU programs should send their application and learning agreement by email to the address erasmusoffice@chania.teicrete.gr Upon arrival at the HMU all international students should report to the International Relations Office and they have to complete some forms. Other documents which also are needed are a face-photo in jpeg form, a copy of passport or ID card and a short CV. The International Relations Office staff will help you and guide you with course registration in the departments, accommodation and answer any question you may have.

 

The deadlines for sending application form and learning agreement are:

  • For the winter semester of academic year: 30th of May
  • For the spring semester of academic year: 30th of November

Practical Issues:

  • Health Services and Insurance

Citizens of the European Union have the right to free medical care and social security in Greece, provided they have obtained their national health insurance card from their country.

 

  • Accommodation

At the Campus of HMU in Chania there are no student dormitories. However, the staff of the International Relations Office will help incoming students to find accommodation in different parts of the town preferably near the University. Every year a limited list of furnished apartments is given to all Erasmus students from where they can search to find accommodation. Offered apartments usually consist of one or two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. Expect to pay around 200 euros per person per month. When booking be sure to get a contact address or telephone number from the landlord in case of any minor emergency and always let the International Relations Office know where you are staying. Also, there exist local web-pages from where every student can search for accommodation. Finally, there exist hotel rooms that offer accommodation for reduced price to Erasmus students.

 

  • Cost of living

Living expenses are estimated to be about 700 euros per month distributed as follows:

Accommodation (rent and other expenses) 250 – 300€

Food 100 – 120€

Transportation – Commuting 100€

Entertainment 150-200€

In Greece the banks are open from 8 am to 2.00 pm. With credit cards such as Visa, MarsterCard, etc, it is possible to withdraw money from cash machines (ATMs) which are located outside banks and in many parts of the city. There is also an ATMs at the campus and nearby locations as well.

 

  • Student benefits

Students have the option to eat in the HMU lunch and dinner with reduced price (the price in current academic year is 2,05€ per meal). Also for students that have low family income (the examination of family income is evaluated every year based on rules that are issued by the Ministry of Education) they can apply to get a card for free meal. In this case they have to ask the Erasmus office for the additional documents that they need to submit with their application.

All Erasmus students are entitled to a card for reduced prices in means of transportation (buses and ferry boats). This card is issued from the Ministry of Education and sent to all students after their registration.

 

  • Library/Internet

The incoming Erasmus students of HMU are eligible to use the Institution library’s facilities for free. They have to get a library card, from the library’s office. Also, all students have access to internet connection at HMU by using the PCs which are in the PC room inside the library. Also they can have access on their own mobile laptop by asking for a wireless code, from the help desk in the network administration office. Finally, there exists a laboratory room for all Erasmus students fully equipped where also they can study, prepare their projects or just associate with the rest Erasmus and other students of HMU during all working days and hours.

 

  • Language of instruction

The language of instruction at University is natively Greek. There are some courses that are offered in English. Information concerning offered courses for department of Electronic Engineering are listed at the website: https://erasmus-ee.chania.teicrete.gr/offered-for-erasmus-students/. The  Erasmus students who wish to follow courses in the various departments, should consult directly with the departmental Erasmus coordinators in order to arrange the program of courses they wish to follow. Students then may submit their application and learning agreement in the International Relations Office (email address: erasmusoffice@chania.teicrete.gr). Upon arrival they will tutored in English and will either be given an examination at the end of the term or submit a written project. 

The minimum English language skills requirement for international students coming to HMU and especially in Chania is B2 level or other equivalent.

 

  • Grading system

  • How to get to HMU and International Relations’ Office from the center of the city

If you want to come to HMU from the center of the city (where is located the Municipal Market ) you can walk for about 25-30 minutes or you have to take the bus from the bus station that is cross the Municipal Market  (in front of the National Bank). The Bus Number is the 11 and the bus-sign is Halepa (in Greek ΧΑΛΕΠΑ). The arrival station for HMU is Evaggelistria (Bus station code 490) estimated time trip is 9 minutes (you can ask the driver to tell you when you reach this bus station). Cross the bus station there is a church and after the church is the Campus of HMU.

The International Relations’ Office is located in the library, at the middle of open-air corridor on the ground floor (opposite the auditorium) .
